George Matsusaburo Hibi

Hisako Hibi's husband, and fellow artist, George Hibi, painted some powerful images of Topaz camp life. Art was a major outlet for many people at Topaz. Chiura Obata, a well known artist, and art professor at UC Berkeley before the war, set up classes for the internees. George himself was an art teacher before the war. He would die just two years after being released from camp.

To me, this painting sums up what camp life must have been like.
